Rehabilitation Using the Interactive Video Game

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer based, interactive simulation environment, and VR games aim to create fun environments that engage users and increase their motivation and have been used in rehabilitation therapy. Purpose of this article was to discuss the rationale, application, limits of the VR game in the rehabilitation of patients with various disease and the key component and the current development of VR serious game for rehabilitation. We carried out a search on Medline through pubmed, Google scholar. On the database, we used ¡°virtual reality¡± as search word and we applied time scale restrictions (1/1/2001 to 1/05/2010). VR game was composed of hardware and software, hardware divided into input and output device. Various input devices have been used VR games in rehabilitation: from webcams to specialized input devices like a pressure mat or data gloves. VR software should have three key concepts: motivation, repetition, and feedback mechanisms. Evidence from the literature has demonstrated the effectiveness, usability and flexibility of VR game for rehabilitation. Rapid development of new technology provides various treatment option and new strategy for rehabilitation. VR game have a advantage of three unique feature: strong motivating nature, compulsory repeated practice, and continuos feedback property. There is little doubt that novel VR technique and game interface provides a useful tool for rehabilitation intervention.
